Through our eyes – Digital Photography Project for Disadvantaged Young People
Through our eyes is a digital photography and design photographic workshop being facilitated by Ralph Olsson photographer and educator. The 14 week course covers a wide range of topics from documentary photography to the urban environment; identity, fashion and consumerism; abstraction and surrealism, through to professional practice.
The project is a partnership between local businesses, Wodonga Secondary College (Huon Campus), local courts, and arts organisations. The project offers photography workshops targeting disadvantaged young people aged 12-18 to build skills in safe and supportive environments, and thereby gain life skills such as teamwork, creativity and the confidence to develop their future.
The project recognises the link between physical activity and emotional wellbeing and believes it is particularly vital to raise young people’s awareness and involvement in physical and creative activity. The effectiveness of visual arts in engaging severely disadvantaged young people is demonstrated through interaction and skill sharing contained in this project and encourages teamwork and the development of interpersonal communication skills, building self-confidence, body awareness while exploring and developing creativity and performance-making skills.
The project strongly encourages social interaction, collaboration and resource sharing between the artists and communities of the participating organisations.
Participants of the project will visit local galleries to discuss photography and attended Albury’s Camera House where Justin Dallinger will introduce them to the processes and techniques involved in image development and manipulation.
Students will gain an understanding of the history and theories of photography and become familiar with key contemporary photographers. Workshop activities include how to present and discuss their work, exhibition making, camera skills, terminology and theories in contemporary art as well as strategies artists use to make work. Participants will be given digital cameras to keep, and be provided with state of the art DSLRs to use for duration of the course, and visual diaries in which they were asked to keep a detailed diary over the 14 weeks.
The workshop involves a tutorial element for leaning based on the following modules –
□ Creative control of shutter speed and ISO
□ Obtaining accurate white balance
□ Improving composition
□ Flash photography techniques
□ Lighting
These techniques are then delivered via practical tutorials covering areas such as documentary photography; landscape; street photography; candid photography; macro photography; surrealism and abstract. Visit the Gallery
